Proto-Persona Workshop
The Challenge
A client embarking on a website redesign wanted to ensure project stakeholders had a clear vision and agreement about the targted audience for the redesign. The schedule did not allow time for primary research before the kickoff meeting, nor had they done traditional primary Persona research in the past. The Process & Result We decided to leverage the internal knowledge of project stakeholders and related departments by conducting a Proto-Persona workshop. Once the base set of Proto-Personas were gathered, and agreed upon we fleshed out and prioritized the most important user tasks for each Proto - Persona. In two days the group walked away with a common set of knowledg of their target audience and base set of user goals and tasks the redevelopment effort needed to support. The next steps included confirming the workshop findings with primary research and direct interactions with their customer and user base. |
Persona Creation Without A BudgetThe ChallengeGreen Mountain Digital had apps in the market via the iTunes market. Apple was tightlipped about who was purchasing their product. GMD wanted more insight into the range of people who purchased and used their applications to assist future design and functionaliy improvements. The company did not have a separate budget available for a specific persona creation project and had very little insight on who had their products on their mobile phone.

The Process & ResultThe UXD department and other areas of GMD received and answered Customer Service related inquires from product owners and users. We decided to mine this set of people to see if, after solving their issues, we could schedule an interview at a later date. This time was used to conduct an interview about their use of the product, and the needs, motivators and behaviours surrounding application use.
Using a set of structured questions and then delving deeper into ares of investigation as the occasion allowed, we were able to gain insights about how people viewed the activity, their knowledge surrounding it, the goals they had and how they expected and wanted to be able to use the application in conjunction with their bird identification and bird knowledge gaining activities. Using the factors of the users' knowledge of species ID activity and level of application engagement, a structure of 4 distinct personas were created to guide application updates and improvements as well as new application development. |
